Oklahoma Nanotechnology Applications Project (ONAP)

The Oklahoma Nanotechnology Applications Project is designed to enable new and existing applications in nanotechnology.

Eligible Applicants: Oklahoma businesses and manufacturers; Oklahoma universities and non-profits institutions are eligible if the proposed project also involves an Oklahoma business or manufacturer as a participant.

Helping to make BIG bucks from very tiny technology

The Oklahoma Nanotechnology Applications Project is a pilot project designed to assist qualified Oklahoma companies with the process of applying nanotechnology through research, development, and manufacturing to improve current products or processes or create new, cutting-edge products or processes.

What is nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is the understanding and control of matter at dimensions of roughly 1 to 100 nanometers, where unique phenomena enable novel applications. Encompassing nanoscale science, engineering and technology, nanotechnology involves imaging, measuring, modeling, and manipulating matter at this length scale.

At the nanoscale, the physical, chemical, and biological properties of materials differ in fundamental and valuable ways from the properties of individual atoms and molecules or bulk matter. Nanotechnology R&D is directed toward understanding and creating improved materials, devices, and systems that exploit these new properties.

A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter; a sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick.

What is ONAP?

The emerging field of nanotechnology has been globally recognized as a fundamental technology and the third great megatrend that will have a profound impact on all aspects of life in the areas of health care, manufacturing, computer technology and information science. Establishing Oklahoma as a leader in the emerging nanotechnology industry will require an internal nanotechnology infrastructure that brings together academic, industrial, financial and business resources to create an environment conducive to the rapid promotion and commercialization of nanotechnology.

The Oklahoma Nanotechnology Applications Project was created by the Oklahoma Legislature to initiate a statewide project to accomplish three activities vitally important to develop an infrastructure to support the nanotechnology industry in Oklahoma.

1. Provide funding and technical support for the application of nanotechnology through the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Applications Project (ONAP), and to assist later stage development of nanotechnology through an Oklahoma Nanotechnology Applications Project (ONAP) program competition specifically targeted towards nanotechnology
2. Provide education about nanotechnology to the state’s economic development network, researchers, manufacturers, and businesses
3. Sustain the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Initiative (ONI) begun in 2005

ONAP in partnership with academic, commercialization and economic development resources in the state provides a mechanism to extend financial support and technical services for the application of nanotechnology in Oklahoma’s manufacturing and business community.

OCAST contracted with the State Chamber of Oklahoma to manage the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Initiative (ONI). ONI provides a focus on the promotion and support of business, academic, manufacturing, employment and investment initiatives related to ONAP and coordinates activities on a regional basis for the benefit of Oklahoma.
