Problem and Pathological gambling is a progressive behavior disorder in which a person has a psychological uncontrollable preoccupation and urge to gamble. This results in excessive gambling, the outcome of which is the loss of time, money, families, careers, and lives. The gambling ultimately reaches the point where it disrupts and destroys the gambler's personal life, family relationships, or vocational pursuits. Therefore, the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) is offering gambling counselor training to assist counselors in providing provide problem gambling treatment services to adolescents, adults, families and significant others with gambling-related disorders and problems.

This 30-hour core level training will assist counselors in meeting a portion of the ODMHSAS gambling treatment professional requirements and a portion of the National Gambling Counselor Certification. ODMHSAS program standards require that gambling treatment professionals working in Certified Gambling Addiction Treatment Programs hold a current license as a behavioral health counselor or certification as an alcohol and drug counselor. In addition to holding a current license or certification, the gambling treatment professional should have:

1) Documented completion of 30 hours of ODMHSAS recognized core gambling training requirements
2) Documented completion of 12 hours of gambling specific continuing education hours every 12 months
