Based on an international award-winning novel by Allan Stratton, the film Life Above All takes place in a dust-ridden village outside of Johannesburg, South Africa. Following the death of her newly born sister, 12-year-old Chanda hears of a dark and threatening rumor that destroys her family and forces her mother to flee. Unsure of the real circumstances and sensing that the gossip stems from prejudice and superstition, Chanda leaves home and school in search for her mother and the truth. Life Above All was selected as the South African entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards and made the final shortlist earlier this year before being picked up for distribution by Sony Picture Classics.
