Just before they leave the state for their opening dates with Radiohead, Oklahoma's own Other Lives will play January 26 at Fassler Hall in Tulsa and January 27 and 28 at the Blue Note in OKC. Utilizing acoustic guitars, piano, bassoon, bass clarinet, violin, French horn, and cello, Other Lives composes intelligent, richly layered orchestral pop. Their painfully unique, suspenseful and dreamy sound is hard to describe, but it?s something like indie-folk Americana meets a Philip Glass chamber orchestra. The BBC?s August review of Other Lives' latest record, Tamer Animals, said that for all of the album's ''expansive horizons, it only lasts 40 minutes. But it?s the most uniquely sublime, meticulous and heroic 40 minutes of 2011.? For such praise, Timeout.com picked Other Lives as one of the top five bands to watch in 2012. The group's 2009 self-titled release included the song, ?Black Tables,? which appeared on four television shows: Grey?s Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Covert Affairs, and One Tree Hill. Other Lives? producer, Joey Waronker, has also worked with big names such as Beck, R.E.M., Elliot Smith, Thom Yorke, and Nora Jones. Other Lives formed in Stillwater in 2003 under the name Kunek and, under this name, they went on to write and record the band?s first effort, Flight of the Flynns, which Oklahomarock.com ranks as the seventh best Oklahoma-produced album in the 2000-2010 decade.
