Based on a short story by Ernest Hemingway, two professional killers invade a small town and kill a gas station attendant and former boxer known as the ?Swede? (Burt Lancaster in his film debut), who was expecting them. An insurance investigator Riordan (Edmond O?Brien) pursues the case against the orders of his boss, who considers it trivial. Weaving together threads of Swede?s life, Riordan uncovers a complex tale of treachery and crime, all linked with the gorgeous, mysterious Kitty Collins (Ava Gardner).
