In an initiative to encourage all Oklahoman's to eat better, move more, and be tobacco free where they live, work, and learn, the Division of Strong and Healthy Oklahoma of the State Department of Health will be implementing Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) in an in-school setting in order to educate and motivate children to eat better and move more where they learn and to further encourage positive nutrition and physical activity changes where they live. In addition to the CATCH curriculum, physical education programs at each participating elementary school will utilize Fitnessgram.
The CATCH in school curriculum is composed of 4 components: Go For Health Classroom Curriculum, CATCH Physical Education, Eat Smart School Nutrition Guide, and family Home Team activities.
Fitnessgram is a fitness assessment and reporting program for youth, first developed in 1982 by The Cooper Institute in response to the need for a comprehensive set of assessment procedures in physical education programs. The assessment includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests that assess aerobic capacity; muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility; and body composition. Scores from these assessments are compared to Healthy Fitness Zone® standards to determine students' overall physical fitness and suggest areas for improvement when appropriate.
