Fire Investigators are strategically
positioned throughout the state, and responsible for investigating
fires, arson, attempted arson, or conspiracy to defraud, consistent
with the arson laws of the State of Oklahoma.
Investigators respond to calls for assistance from fire departments
and law enforcement agencies across the state to determine the
origin and cause of fires. Where probable cause exists, they have
the authority to arrest persons suspected of being involved in
arson-related activities.
Each year, approximately 750 fire scenes are investigated, of which
one-half are ruled arson. An estimated $15 million worth of property
is lost each year as a direct result of arson-related crimes. The
crime of arson carries a maximum of 35 years in prison and a $25,000
fine.
